Build a Garden for Dragonflies
Mosquitoes, water, predators and what happens when a garden starts behaving like habitat
There is a particular kind of evening in Los Angeles when the marine layer doesn't quite burn off, the air holds unfamiliar humidity into the night, and by eight o'clock everyone on the street seems to be talking about mosquitoes. We're a dry-heat city, comfortable with Santa Ana wind and cracked clay soil, but a run of sticky evenings and the bites start stacking up in a way that feels personal.
The instinct is to ask what kills them. A garden designer's instinct tends toward a different question: what eats them. That leads not to a spray bottle but to water, and eventually to dragonflies, though not the way the question usually gets answered. A dragonfly is not a solution. It's a predator, one of many, and predators only exist inside a working system of water, prey, shelter, and time. Understanding that system, rather than shopping for a single fix, is the more interesting project, and it's the one this story is actually about.
The secret life underwater
Almost everyone who's met a dragonfly has met the adult, glinting and hovering over water. Almost no one has met the part of its life that made that appearance possible, because it happens underwater, and it's the longer part by far.
A dragonfly begins as an egg laid in or near fresh water, then hatches into an aquatic nymph, or naiad, that spends anywhere from a few months to several years living entirely submerged, depending on species and water temperature. This is the real childhood, and it isn't gentle. Naiads hunt with a hinged, fang-tipped mouthpart called a mask, folded beneath the head until prey comes close enough to strike, and their diet is wide-ranging: mosquito larvae when available, along with mayfly larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other aquatic insects, with larger, late-stage naiads of some species occasionally taking a tadpole or very small fish. They move by jet propulsion, expelling water through the rear of the abdomen.
Eventually, usually at night, a mature naiad climbs an emergent stem breaking the water's surface and stops there, half in the air for the first time. Its skin splits down the back. What emerges is soft and folded, nothing like a flier yet, but over several hours it pumps fluid into its wings, hardens in the open air, and takes off, leaving the empty case of its old aquatic self clinging to the stem. That shell has a name, an exuvia, and it's one of the few pieces of physical proof that a garden pond is doing its job.
The mosquito problem
This is the part that has to be gotten exactly right. If mosquitoes breed in standing water, why deliberately add water to a garden?
Not all standing water behaves the same way, and a garden pond isn't automatically exempt just because it's intentional. Los Angeles County now hosts an invasive species, Aedes aegypti, spreading through the region since it was first detected here in 2011, and it's a container breeder that favors small, often hidden amounts of water in saucers, gutters, and forgotten buckets rather than large open water, which is why the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District and, further east, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District spend so much of their public messaging on emptying small containers.
A designed water feature doesn't stop being potential mosquito habitat simply because we intended it for wildlife. What changes the equation is how that water is designed and maintained.
UC's Integrated Pest Management Program is specific about what separates the two. Mosquito larvae prefer shallow, still water less than about two feet deep, so real depth and steep edges already work against them, and a small pump reducing stagnation helps further. Where some standing water is unavoidable, UC guidance and GLACVCD point to products containing Bti, a bacterium that acts as a stomach poison specifically in fly larvae. UC is specific that this selectivity is what makes it compatible with a wildlife pond: Bti affects only fly larvae, so it won't harm the predatory insects, dragonfly naiads included, already living there.
Mosquitofish are sometimes offered as an alternative, but they aren't native to California, and UC IPM and GLACVCD both caution against releasing them anywhere but a fully enclosed feature. For a habitat garden, that's reason enough to lean on depth, circulation, and Bti instead.
None of this makes a wildlife pond mosquito-proof. It makes it manageable, through attention rather than a single fix.
How to build dragonfly habitat
Once the water is handled responsibly, the rest is a set of relationships that need to sit near each other.
A shallow shelf near the edge and a deeper section toward the center serve different species and life stages. Underwater, native or non-invasive submerged vegetation gives naiads somewhere to hide while hunting.
At the surface, emergent plants rooted in the mud but rising above the waterline aren't decoration. They're the ladder a naiad climbs to leave the water, and without something rigid enough to grip, that final transformation can't happen.
California bulrush (Schoenoplectus californicus) and a native rush like Juncus patens work well here, alongside arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia) at the margins.
Two commonly sold pond plants are worth avoiding: parrotfeather (Myriophyllum aquaticum) and Brazilian egeria (Egeria densa) are both listed as invasive and restricted in California, and parrotfeather tends to form the kind of dense mat that favors mosquito breeding rather than discouraging it.
Around the pond, adults need somewhere to perch and warm themselves, so leave open branches or bare stems nearby. Full or near-full sun helps.
Surrounding native sages and buckwheats supply the smaller flying insects that round out an adult's diet, and broad-spectrum insecticides should stay away from the pond entirely. UC IPM is specific that protecting dragonflies and other aquatic predators means avoiding those products near the water they depend on.
The small garden question
Not every Los Angeles lot has room for a proper pond, which raises a fair question: does dragonfly habitat require acreage this city rarely offers?
It helps to be precise about what counts.
A birdbath or shallow saucer gives adults somewhere to drink and hunt nearby, real value, but not breeding habitat. It's too shallow and temporary for a naiad to complete a cycle that can run past a year.
A rain garden supports the terrestrial side of the system, insects, moisture, shelter, but without standing water attached, it isn't where eggs get laid.
A properly built container pond, a half wine barrel or stock tank with real depth, a stable water level, and the same emergent structure a larger pond needs, can function as genuine breeding habitat, particularly for damselflies and smaller dragonfly species known to tolerate compact water bodies more readily.
The difference isn't size. It's whether the water is deep, permanent, and structured enough for a naiad to finish growing up in it.
A bowl isn't a pond just because something occasionally lands on it.
Dragonflies are not employees
It would be easy to end this story by tallying mosquitoes eaten, and it would miss the point.
Dragonflies do eat mosquitoes, gnats, and a wide range of other small insects, and that predation is real. But a dragonfly didn't evolve to provide pest control for a household in Los Angeles. It belongs to a water system old enough to have organized an entire order of insects around it, and it does what it has always done whether or not anyone is watching.
Thinking of wildlife primarily by the service it performs for us is a habit worth resisting, not because the service isn't real, but because it quietly turns every creature in the garden into an unpaid employee, valuable only insofar as it's useful.
Building habitat is a different posture.
It says: this water, these plants, this structure, might be enough to make a dragonfly want to live here, and if it does, that isn't a service rendered.
It's a relationship we don't get to manage, only make room for.
What this means for how we design
A conventional landscape can be visually striking and ecologically almost silent, all form and no traffic.
A living garden has relationships moving through it, visibly and invisibly, all the time.
Something flowers. Something pollinates it. Something eats the seed that follows. Something hunts the thing eating the seed. Something lays eggs in the water. Something, eventually, climbs out of that water with wings it didn't have an hour before.
That's the kind of garden Wild & Tame is interested in building. Not one where every organism is accounted for and managed, but one where the conditions are set well enough that something we didn't personally place there decides to stay.
Sometimes the whole of the design is deciding what to leave open.
A dragonfly can't be added to a garden the way a plant can. It can only be invited by everything that happens before it arrives, and the only proof the invitation worked is small, easy to miss, and left behind on purpose: an empty case on a stem, exactly the shape of the life that outgrew it.
