A Magical Apothecary Garden for a Maker in Ojai

There are places that feel like they belong to another time. Not in a nostalgic way, but in a remembered way. The kind where you step in and your body knows what to do before your mind catches up.

This apothecary garden in Ojai is one of those places.

We designed and installed this apothecary garden for a maker whose work is inseparable from her land.

Everything begins here. She grows what she uses, and harvests what she needs. Then distills, extracts, and bottles in her home laboratory.

And then — just steps away — she opens her front door.

Inside, the space feels like stepping back in time. Shelves lined with glass bottles, light moving through tinctures, plants woven into every corner. A small sample station where people slow down, smell, taste, ask questions. Nothing is rushed or outsourced.

It’s all part of the same ecosystem. The garden had to reflect that. Not ornamental or decorative. But functional, alive, and intentional. A working medicinal herb garden designed to support both daily life and product making.

We planted with purpose:

  • herbs for tinctures and oils

  • flowers for extraction and beauty

  • plants that respond to the rhythm of the land, not a trend

Everything placed so that you could walk through it and understand — even without being told — that this is a working space. A living laboratory.

This is what we’re drawn to: makers’ gardens and healers’ gardens. Spaces where the line between growing, creating, and living disappears.

There was a time when this wasn’t niche. When people understood that what you grew was what you used, and was what sustained you. That your garden wasn’t separate from your work. It was your work.

We’re interested in bringing that back. Not as a trend, but as a return to slower systems, sensory environments, and spaces that actually do something.

The apothecary garden is one version of that: a place where land becomes a product, where the process is visible, and where beauty and function are the same thing. This is the kind of space we design with Wild & Tame.

We design apothecary gardens, medicinal herb gardens, and outdoor environments rooted in the way people actually live and make.

Based in Los Angeles, with select projects taken on outside the city.

Spaces you step into — and remember something you didn’t know you forgot.

If you’re looking to create an apothecary or medicinal garden, we take on a limited number of Wild & Tame projects each season.
